THE HENTY OBSERVER AND CULCAIRN SHIRE REGISTER, FRIDAY. DECEMBER 4, 1942. Page Five Public School Concert ENJOYABLE PROGRAMME PRESENTED Seldom, if ever, has the seating accommodation at the Henty School of Arts been so taxed as it was last Friday night, on the occasion of the annual concert by the pupils of the Henty Public School. All available seats had been reserved prior to the concert, and by curtain-rise the hall was packed to the doors. Extra seating and chairs were brought into commission, but even then there were some who could not gain admission.
The programme itself was long and varied, and clearly demonstrated that there is a wealth of juvenile talent in our midst. One very pleasing feature was the elimination of "noise" from the stage, thereby enabling the audience to hear all the items clearly and distinctly. Too much praise cannot be given to the Headmaster, Mr. P. A.
Leonard, B.A., (classes 8 and 9), and the staff, Mrs. A. Eagleton 1, 2 and 3B), Miss P. Ashton (classes 3, 4 and 5), and Miss E. Day (classes 6 and 7), and the accompaniste, Miss Rufa Barrie, for the thorough and painstaking way in which the various classes had been trained in their items, either as classes or individually.
The costumes were excellent, and were made by the lady members of the staff, assisted by parents. Financially, the result was better than anticipated, and the net profit will be over £31. Before the conclusion of the programme, Mr. N. C.
R. Elphick, President of the Parents and Citizens' Association, thanked the staff and pupils for their effort, and said that the huge audience had appreciated every item. He concluded by saying that any future concert by the school pupils will draw even a bigger audience, if that were possible. The programme was as Chorus, "Song of Australia" and "Advance Australia Fair," school pupils; recitation, "Mustard," Pat Rossell; song and dance, "The Bluebells' Party," 1st, 2nd and 3B classes; verse speaking, "The Duel," 3rd, 4th and 5th classes; carols, "The First Noel," "Silent Night," and "From the Starry Heavens High," school choir; violin solo, "Last Rose of Allan Sutherland; physical cuture display, senior girls; vocal solo, "The Lass With the Delicate Air," Arthur Polkinghorne; play, "The Great Invention," 3rd, 4th and 5th classes; singing games, 1st, 2nd and 3B classes; Quintette, "Good-night, Mr. Moon," Kevin Piltz, John Whitlock, Lionel Fischer, Neil Kendall and Ken Hodges; prairie scene, senior pupils; verse speaking, "Waves," "The King's Breakfast," "Shoes and Stockings" and "Vespers," 1st, 2nd and 3B classes; cantata, "The King's Crown," 3rd, 4th and 5th classes.
